Long distance adoptions
At the present time Yeshe Norbu Appello per il Tibet o.n.l.u.s keeps around 1000 long distance adoptions of Tibetan refugees in India and in Nepal. As all volunteering, our organization spontaneously began and gradually grew up during the years thanks to the devotion of a lot of people.
Two of the founders of the Lama Tsong Khapa Institute and of Yeshe Norbu tell us their history:
In 1970 we were in Kathmandu, Nepal. After a twenty days’ travel by train and by bus through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India we would perhaps have got accustomed to the sight of ragged and undernourished children who spent their lives in the street, but this sight indeed kept on breaking our hearts. We wanted to help them all, even take them all with us, but obviously it was impossible.
Four years later our daughter was born. She was beautiful, sweet and with a serious brain lesion because of a lack of oxygen during the birth.
The following year, in 1975, during the first course of meditation held in Italy by two great Tibetan teachers, we asked their help to make an international adoption of one of that street children that we had not forgotten.
They suggested us not to uproot them from their culture but instead help them grow up and study in their environment: those children would have less suffered and we would have had the possibility to help more than one child and would have truly contributed to the development of the human resources of their country for a longer time. That was our first long distance adoption.

After that, some people at the Lama Tsong Khapa Institute made other long distance adoptions and a group of sponsors came to life. Having realized the good results and seen more and more people running away from Tibet, the people in charge at the refugee camps and at the monasteries started asking for more and more help.
A small group of volunteers wanted to face this humanitarian emergency and gradually created a simple and reliable fund-raising that became Yeshe Norbu Appello per il Tibet o.n.l.u.s., also thanks to the practical and organizing support of Shiné.
